Daniel Miessler: from prompt engineering to intent engineering

Miessler urges people to stop telling AI how to do things and start describing the outcomes they want.

Security researcher and writer Daniel Miessler argues that as AI improves, step-by-step instructions in prompts become a handicap rather than a help. Drawing on Rich Sutton’s “bitter lesson”, he recommends describing what should be done, the outcome, rather than how to do it.

Why it matters for structured intent: “intent engineering” is becoming the practitioner’s word for this shift. Most writing on it is about prompts. Structured intent gives the idea a durable, checkable artifact.
